The Makropulos Case
This evening we managed to get tickets for the opera at the Coliseum. English National Opera were performing Czech composer, Janacek's The Makropulos Case, the composer's penultimate opera. A very unusual opera with a slightly sci-fi theme has at it's centre 'the enigmatic Emilia Marty, the cold-hearted diva whose uncanny knowledge of past events provides the key to resolving a 100-year-old lawsuit but also unlocks ancient mysteries that call into question mankind's obsessive quest for eternal life.' She has lived for three hundred years as different women, all with the initials EM.
Emilia's part was performed by Amanda Roocroft and the production was a co-production with the National Theatre in Prague. The set was a striking steel-and-glass Art Deco creation and the opera was conducted by one of Britain's great conducting talents, and Janacek champion, Sir Richard Armstrong.
It was a tremendous performance, which we enjoyed enormously. No photos during the performance, of course, but here are a couple of the interior of the Coliseum.
